For Immediate Release

December 9th, 2008

ART TRIBES FILM SERIES TO LAUNCH AT DOT FIFTYONE GALLERY

ON DECEMBER 12, 2008

THE FIRST INSTALLMENT FEATURES SELECTIONS FROM
THE FLAHERTY FILM SEMINAR PROGRAM 2009.

Wynwood Art District, Miami, November 25, 2008 – Phonograph Films [programming entity of The Florida Room Film Festival,] announces today that it will launch a new screening series on Friday, December 12, at 8 PM at Dot Fiftyone Gallery in the Wynwood Art District. The screenings will occur monthly on the second Friday of every month. The series premiers December 12th with selected works from the 2008 Robert Flaherty Film Seminar, The Age of Migration, which took place in June and was curated by Chi-hui Yang of the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival.

The new series is partly sponsored by 2b, a not-for-profit initiative of Dot Fiftyone Gallery, Phonograph Films and ArtTribesNetwork.com.

The ART TRIBES FILM SERIES will mark the Miami debut of works by Oliver Husain, a German-Indian artist currently based in Toronto, who crafts worlds that are somewhat familiar to the viewer, but are also vaguely bizarre, visually captivating, and fantastically delightful. The series will also mark the Miami premier of the works by Canadian artist Alison Kobayashi, which feature the artist in intimate and often hilarious dramatizations of found, answering machine tapes and teen-age love letters.

Flaherty Seminar curator, Chi-hui Yang of the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival, says, “If part of the Seminar’s quest was to find a new language to deal with an interconnected, globally flattened reality, it was perhaps Oliver Husain who had the most coherent form…. Surreal, romantic, disorienting and whimsical, his videos are experiential and almost indescribable.”

Mary Kerr, executive director of The Flaherty, says “We are thrilled that the innovative and thought-provoking works that screen at the Flaherty Seminar can be seen by wider audiences.”

Juan Carlos Zaldívar, executive director of Art Tribes says, “The inaugural program for Art Tribes celebrates independent and groundbreaking films that blur the lines between the worlds of art and film by showcasing the unique and undiscovered films and videos of Oliver Husain and Alison Kobayashi. It also perhaps exemplifies Chi-hui Yang’s possible proposition that ideas and concepts are migrating as much as people in our present age.”

The Art Tribes Film Series program on December 12th will include:
•	Squiggle (2005, 21 min.) - A personal exploration of a young man’s desire to understand himself as an artist as he returns to India, his homeland. While a group of Indian workers build a mud-architecture performance stage by hand, he muses on the art world and ideas of ritual, tradition, and place.
•	From Alex to Alex (2006, 6 min., Canada, color, video) A found object – an awkward love letter between two adolescent boys – provides the narrative in this exploration of performance, gender and desire. Kobayashi plays the roles of both boys as well as those around them, creating a fantasy of reality and suggesting the mutability of identity and race.
•	Shrivel (2005, 8 min.) - A surrealist fantasy of a hyper-globalized Indonesian suburb where American consumer culture and lifestyle have taken over. Amidst tract homes, bad hair, and incessant cell phone calls, a hysteric, soap-operatic mystery unfolds.
•	Dan Carter (2006, 15 min., Canada, color, video) The domestic life and everyday relations of an unseen man are revealed through his found answering machine messages. Donning mumus, moustaches, and wigs, Kobayashi enacts each call’s intents: greetings, pleads, and reconciliations from friends, lovers, and family. The result is a revealing glimpse of a man who is never seen or heard from, and an experiment in the limits of documentary portraiture.

Dot Fifty-one Gallery is a flexible, mobile structure and a production laboratory for contemporary and conceptual art. The company moved to Miami in 2002 and co-produced The Florida Room Film Festival for five years in an interest to build community and develop new, creative ways to use film and art as tools for social change. To this end, Phonograph Films continues to organize exhibitions and civic engagement events around films, art and media.

The Robert Flaherty Film Seminar is named after Robert Flaherty (1884-1951), who is considered by many to be the father of the American documentary. Founded in 1955, the Flaherty Seminar is an annual showcase for nonfiction cinema. Filmmaker Magazine says, "The Seminar has evolved into one of the more idiosyncratic and invigorating stops in the film world." Flaherty's groundbreaking documentary of Eskimo life, Nanook of the North is among the most noted films of the silent era. The films of such directors as Robert Drew, Louis Malle, the Maysles brothers, Mira Nair, Satyajit Ray, and Robert M. Young were shown at the Seminar before they were known generally in the American film community. New cinematic techniques and approaches first presented and debated at the Seminar have routinely made their way into mainstream American film.

For more information on The Art Tribes Screening Series, please join the network at:
www.ArtTribesNetwork.com

Contact:
Juan Carlos Zaldívar, Executive Director
Phonograph Films LLC / ArtTribesNetwork.com
PhonographFilms@mac.com
305-753-3316

or

DOT Fiftyone Gallery
51 NW 36st
Wynwood Art & Design District - MIAMI, Florida 33127
305-573-9994 / 305-573-3754
dot@dotfiftyone.com
http://www.dotfiftyone.com
